(SourcePIB (Press Information Bureau), June 25, 2025)

Topic: GS Paper 3: Science & Tech: Environmental Pollution, Biotechnology

Context

  • On June 24, 2025, researchers at DST’s Institute of Nanoscience & Technology (INST), Mohali, revealed a biodegradable, AI‑powered water filtration technology.

Content

1. Need & Problem

  • Industrial effluents (textiles, pharma) carry toxic dyes (Methylene Blue, Congo Red) harmful to health and environment.

2. The Innovation

  • 3D‑printed PLA scaffold with piezo‑photocatalytic capability.

  • Coated with Bismuth Ferrite (BiFeO₃), activated by sunlight and mechanical vibrations.

3. AI Integration

  • Machine learning models (ANNs) predict optimal degradation performance (accuracy up to 99%) .

4. Efficiency & Sustainability

  • 98.9% removal of Congo Red, 74.3% removal of Methylene Blue — beats many existing high-end systems.

  • Eco‑friendly, low‑cost, reusable, biodegradable, and based on renewable energy.

5. Scalability & Application

  • Suitable for industrial and rural deployment.

  • Promotes clean-energy ecosystems, processing wastewater without chemicals .

Analysis

  • Merges green chemistry, nanotech, AI, and manufacturing innovation — a model for future tech solutions.

  • Potential synergy with Jal Jeevan Mission and clean industrial initiatives.

Way Forward

  • Pilot-scale demonstrations in industries/communities.

  • Collaboration with public utilities and private sectors.

  • Policy push for adoption under Ganga rejuvenation/industrial pollution control schemes.

Practice Question: “Discuss how AI-enabled piezo-photocatalytic technologies could revolutionize wastewater treatment in India. In your answer, highlight technological, institutional, and environmental perspectives.”
