1. Indian Railways to Modernize Ticketing System with Multilingual, Secure Features

(SourcePIB (Press Information Bureau), June 30, 2025)

Topic: GS Paper 2 – Governance and Public Policy (e‑governance & citizen convenience initiatives)

Context

  • Indian Railways is upgrading its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) to make train ticket booking faster, smarter, more user-friendly, and more secure—benefitting passengers through improved capacity, multilingual interface, advanced charting, and enhanced Tatkal booking security.

Content

  • Advanced Charting Mechanism

    • Chart generation moved from 4 hrs before departure to 8 hrs before.

    • For trains departing before 14:00 hrs, charts prepared by 21:00 hrs the previous day.

    • Benefits: reduces waitlist uncertainty, aids remote travellers, and allows alternative planning earlier.

  • Next‑Gen PRS (by Dec 2025)

    • New system built by CRIS: agile, scalable, multilingual.

    • Ticketing capacity: ≥150,000 tickets/min (≈5× current 32,000/min).

    • Enquiry capacity: ≥4 million/min (10× current volume).

    • Features include seat preference, fare calendar, and support for disadvantaged groups.

  • Tatkal Booking Security

    • From 1 July 2025, Aadhaar or government ID linked via DigiLocker required.

    • From end-July 2025, OTP‑based authentication mandatory.

    • Aims to curb fraud, bots, and boost transparency

Conclusion

This overhaul of the PRS strengthens citizen-centric governance, enhances digital infrastructure, and boosts system transparency and reliability. Next steps include phased roll-out, robust testing, feedback collection, and expansion—potentially integrating PRS with other travel platforms (e.g., UPI, metro, bus).

Practice Question: “Examine how modernizing the Indian Railways’ Passenger Reservation System through early charting, increased capacity, multilingual interfaces, and Aadhaar‑based authentication can enhance citizen‑centric e‑governance.
