Q1) Discuss the strategic and technological implications of India’s pursuit of nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs).
(GS Paper 3 Security, Defense Technology, 15 marks, 250 words)

Answer:

India’s pursuit of nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) is a critical step in strengthening its maritime capabilities. SSNs differ from conventional diesel-electric submarines due to their endurance, speed, and stealth. They can stay submerged longer, travel faster, and conduct deep-sea operations, offering a strategic edge in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The geopolitical implications are significant. With increasing Chinese assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, including its deployment of submarines near the Andaman Sea, India needs a credible deterrent. SSNs will enhance India’s capacity to monitor chokepoints like the Malacca Strait and project power across the region.

On the technological front, developing SSNs requires mastery in nuclear propulsion, underwater navigation systems, and hull design, thus contributing to indigenous defense manufacturing and “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” The Arihant-class SSBN program has already laid the foundation for nuclear submarine capability.

However, concerns exist regarding safety protocols, international oversight (given India is not a signatory to the NPT), and long gestation periods of defense manufacturing. Environmental issues related to nuclear fuel handling also need resolution.

In conclusion, SSNs are not merely defense assets but instruments of strategic deterrence, diplomacy, and technological advancement.
